Each year the season of dark days and early nights brings me longing for a dose of sunshine like never before. I find that winter creeps into my spirit like a dark shadow that I have to actively fight to overcome. Does this happen to you, too?
These cold, dark weeks can seem so overwhelming. But I’ve been thinking lately that maybe the celebration of holidays during this time of year was established because there’s no way we would survive the season, otherwise. (I guess this is why so many mammals hibernate, so they can skip the season all together. Sometimes that doesn't sound so bad.)
Without celebration we would come out of winter so worn and weathered. Yet instead, thanks to a time of gathering, we come out with positive memories, strength and hope for the future. And so I keep reminding myself that it is so important to take part in the festivities of the season. To decorate, to dress up and attend parties, to gather with loved ones and share meals, to exchange gifts and gratitudes. All of this celebration invites us escape the bleakness of winter, to refocus and bring into sight the things that truly matter.
