Today Michael and I are celebrating our fourth anniversary (!). It's hard for me to believe that so much time has passed—because, although we've experienced a lot over the last few years, I can remember our wedding like it was yesterday.
It was a damp spring day in Asheville, NC. The flowers were just beginning to bloom, the trees had these perfectly bright green buds, and there was so much life in the air. The sky was slightly overcast and the sun shone dimly when there wasn't a drizzle. A few hours before the ceremony we had our first look and gathered with our immediate family to explore the grounds of the Biltmore Estate and take photos. We then headed to the Deerpark for our ceremony at half past six in the evening.
A string trio played, while our friend sang Simple Gifts as Michael walked down the aisle with his parents and I walked down with mine. Our pastor gave a message and challenge, and then we took communion with our family. We also wrote our own vows and exchanged promises with one another.
We said: In the presence of God, our family, and our friends, I take you to be my husband/wife, promising with God's help to be loving and faithful. I promise to encourage your faith in Jesus and generous heart, because that is what makes you amazing. I promise to nurture your talent and dreams, because through them your soul shines. I promise to help shoulder our challenges, for there is nothing we cannot face if we stand together. I promise to be your partner in all things, not possessing you, but working with you as part of the whole. I promise to share with you the joys of life, because with you they will be that much sweeter. In heath and sickness, through sorrow and success—this is my sacred vow to you, for all the days of my life.
It's been a big four years, it's been full of change and adventure, and although it's been a lot of work at times, it has also been so good. Happy anniversary, my friend and my partner!
