There have been times in my life when I did things a certain way because I thought that’s how I was supposed to do them. But then, there have also been a handful of times in my life when I was granted moments of clarity mixed with good fortune—and I discovered there were other options out there.
Almost a decade ago I was faced with one of these moments of clarity. Through a series of conversations with friends and family, I realized that I needed a break from college (and myself), so after months of searching and discovery I was off to Ghana for a year. Now, almost exactly 10 years later I’ve been lucky enough to have a new moment of clarity, matched by an extra-heavy dose of good fortune.
Over the last year I've spread my wings as a mother, but I've also grown as a professional—and I've struggled to to be wise about how I spend my time and energy, while being responsible to the commitments I've made. This has led to some deep soul searching and the realization that I need a lifestyle change. A better balance, if you will. After approaching my company with some thoughts, they offered the opportunity to build a role that works for all of us. (What a gift!) The plan is to grow my team, and then reduce my hours after Connor's arrival. And this plan, really is the best of both worlds; I'll have more personal time, while still having the opportunity to contribute professionally. It's a new take on having it all, and I couldn't be happier.
