Ryan has now been attending Frog Pond for nearly a month, and so far we've been really happy with our decision for him to start school. He's also coming up on his second birthday in less then two months and has yet to start talking. Some days I worry about his seemingly lack of interest in using words, and I Google and read and Google and read, looking for encouragement. Mind you, he's very communicative, pointing and making noises to express his thoughts and feelings—and he can clearly understand what we're saying to him.
But just this week, we received a sweet update from school about his adjustment. They shared that one of his unique strengths is that he loves making contact and connecting with friends, and that since he 'does not have his words yet' he communicates through touch and hugs. While I'm still curious to know when Ry will decide to start talking, I'm encouraged that it's not an issue I should be worried about (at least not yet). And it got me thinking that just maybe, all of us should be talking a little less and hugging a little more.
