My friend Ashley and I have never lived near one another so it has always been important for us to plan visits to grow and sustain our friendship. These days she lives in Alabama, so when we were planning our next trip she recommended that we visit northwest Florida’s scenic Highway 30A. The 19-mile road is located between Destin and Panama City, and it features a string of small, dreamy beach towns.
While we were together we shared updates on our lives and we talked about big picture things too. We also reflected on our friendship of 10 years, and how much both of us have changed as individuals over the last decade—but somehow, even in our transformation, we have not grown further apart. In fact, it's almost as if our trajectory is heading for the same destination. And I realize that sort friendship is truly a gift.
Even though we got caught in a few torrential downpours, I was still completely charmed by my visit to the panhandle. The clear water and white-sand beaches are lovely in their own right, add to that lovely planned communities, with shops, dining and homes, all with distinct architecture—and you get a perfect coastal escape.
