I've been watching the new series about Albert Einstein, called Genius, and produced by National Geographic. The collection of 10 episodes has provided so much insight for me, not only about Einstein, as a man, father, and husband, but also about this time in history. In one of the episodes, Einstein is having a conversation with a friend about warfare, when he shares:
“Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” -Albert Einstein
I thought this truth and simplicity was so powerful. It made me think about how our human inclination to control things, whether physically or verbally, is often the exact opposite approach that we should take, if our goal is peace. It even made me think about the difference in parenting between positive discipline and retaliatory punishment, and how coercion, as a parent to a child, or adult to adult, does not facilitate loving or heathy relationships. Now, the challenge is to daily show enough mercy to myself and others, so that we can experience peace through understanding.
