I’ve always preferred art that feels like it is from the mind or eyes of the artist rather than an exact replica of reality. So as an artist, whether I’m drawing, painting or stitching, I’m attracted to scenes that tell a story—and my goal is to create something that shares a new approach to something familiar. I want people to see one of my pieces and reflect about what it reminds them of, and wonder what it was inspired by. I want the visual experience of viewing the piece to take some time, to look at the stitches and then think about the image. The writer Joan Didion once said, "Remember what it is to be me. That is always the point." That's what I'm aiming for in art... to see the person behind the creation; and when I create, I'm trying to remember me.
